LIVELY PRACTICAL APPROACHES TO UPGRADING YOUR INTERPRETATION TECHNIQUES: Working with ‘retour’

AfIA offers interactive online courses for interpreters working into a B language who wish to improve technical know-how and advance ‘retour’ interpreting skills.


  • Definition
    The International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC) defines a ‘B’ language as ‘a language other than the interpreter's native language, of which she or he has a perfect command and into which she or he works from one or more of her or his other languages. Some interpreters work into a 'B' language in only one of the two modes of interpretation.’ aiic.org

    • Improving the clarity and precision of the message in a ‘B’ language during consecutive and/or simultaneous interpreting
    • Maintaining a high level of style, grammatical precision, and accent
    • Enhancing clarity of meaning, articulation and speed of delivery
    • Critically assessing your own interpreting practice
    • Broadening your vocabulary
    • Avoiding literal translations
    • Elegantly distinguishing between registers in your multilingual discourse
    • Exploring the ever-expanding boundaries of the profession together
    • Contributing to defining new frontiers of interpretation as they unfold on the African continent.


  • Teaching Methodology


Continuous professional development based on 2-hour modules focusing on identified areas for improvement in communicative practices
Up to date conference terminology
Real-world knowledge building on existing organizational know-how
Applied practice in relevant technical areas
Tailor-made language exercises drawing on fun source material (film, cartoons, puzzles, crosswords, online board games, etc.)
Practical, real-life interpreting experience using video, sight translation and interpretation with text, based on high-level speeches from global political and economic leaders.

  • Registration


These free-standing modules are tailored to the candidates’ own learning projects. To fit into the interpreter’s workload, 2-hour course modules of up to three sessions with trainer/week are currently available at an hourly rate of XXX or a discounted course fee of XXXX.
Flexible programming is offered on days and times suitable for the interpreter over two months.
